I rely on music to focus and inspire me in both my writing and editing work, so I'm starting a series of prompts based on songs. My plan is to listen to the song and then set a twenty-minute writing timer and see what happens. I would love to have you join me and share what you write!
Prompt: In “Hearts and Bones,” Paul Simon sings, “Thinking back to the season before/ Looking back through the cracks in the door . . .” Imagine a character looking through a crack in the door, seeing or overhearing something they weren’t meant to witness. Describe what they see and hear. How does witnessing this scene change them?
This prompt should work for any genre! Just swap the word “character” above for your own perspective or another narrative voice.
